Gregory family papers, 1774-1932.

The collection consists of papers of the Gregory family of Ireland from 1774-1932. The collection documents five generations and includes the papers of Robert Gregory, William Gregory, Robert and Elizabeth O'Hara Gregory, Sir William H. and Isabella Augusta Gregory, and William Robert Gregory. Mostly comprised of correspondence, the collection also includes financial records, scrapbooks, literary manuscripts, and printed material.

William Henry Gregory (1817-1892), M.P. for County Galway, Ireland, and later appointed Governor-General of Ceylon (1872-1877). He married Elizabeth Temple Bowdoin who died in Ceylon in 1873. Robert Gregory (1790-1847), oldest son of William and Anne Gregory of Galway, Ireland. He married Elizabeth O'Hara (1799-1875) and they had one son, William Henry Gregory (1817-1892). Robert built up the Gregory estate of Coole Park and died there while caring for tenants suffering from an outbreak of plague. Robert Gregory (1727-1810) was born in Ireland. He made his fortune as a merchant in India. In 1766 he settled in Kent, England and served as a member of the British Parliament (1768-1784). He also served as a director of the East India Company (1769-1782) and as chairman of the Court of Directors in 1782.
